Brief History of Police dog |
Police dog
handlers are career that involving in training police dogs or canines. We all
know that animals can be trained and taught new skills such as to play games,
drawing, standing up, and many more. Animals or pets are like young children
sometimes. They can be taught through repetition and anticipation. Plus, they
can earn respect and recognition just like police dogs.
During the mid of
1800s, canines begin working in law enforcement. Dogs were chosen to be trained
for protection in night shift. The training began in Germany and Belgium.
Canines were assigned to guard duty because of their intelligence and a strong
sense of smell. As there are many dog breeds, several breeds were to tested out
their abilities and sensing skills. It wasn’t necessary to choose the dogs that
were strong and aggressive because mostly canines were needed only their
intelligence and a strong sense of smell which human lack. And then Europe
started seeing the capabilities and abilities of the dogs and began to teach
them to work in law enforcement as well. It was not until 1069-70 that canines
were recognized and used in the U.S.
All canines were
trained some basic obedience classes by trainers or police dog handlers. They
must obey the trainers and keep aggressive under control. Trained K9s have been
given the tasks to look for missing objects or individuals, sniffing out bombs,
detecting causes of fires, searching for drugs and more. K9s were doing their
jobs in the effective results. Some even found dead bodies. Each dog has
different capabilities such as some breeds are good at sensing and smelling
while others are good at protecting or attacking in the aggressive way. K9s are
used to detect live persons that are lost, trapped in the buildings. Especially
in natural disasters, K9s can be very useful for the dangerous situation in
helping out people.
Nowadays, K9s are
used by law enforcement in most major U.S cities and throughout the world.
Police dog handlers are to train the K9s and guide them during the training
until they’re able to perform the given tasks. Even though one is a dog and one
is human being, the pair needs to respect one another and will work together
until one of them retires or dies. When assigning the tasks especially the
dangerous and risky ones, there are high chances that K9s may be injured or
dead but we all know that they are trained to be loyal and they can fight or
defend their partners until they die. If K9s or police dogs are intentional
killed in the line of duty, a funeral will be held just like humans for showing
respect and recognition to them.
To be police dog
handlers are not easy. It is truly an exciting and challenging career. When
each trainer and dog develops the bond, sometimes it is hard to see the other
got hurt or injured. This is why becoming an effective handler needs to be able
to separate personal feelings and responsibilities otherwise he/she won’t be
able to perform the job well enough.
