How to train police dogs for security

Canine handlers or police dog handlers who work in special law enforcement must train and work diligently with the dogs. It is to ensure that both the handlers and their dogs will continue to do well after they have been trained together. And in this article, we are going to talk about how they train the dogs for security.
Police dog handlers have their responsibility to train the dogs until they pass training sessions. When it comes to security, the dog will be tested out its ability by being taken to a car rental parking lot where there are about 20 cars lined up. The dog has to find out the hidden explosives. The handler will take the dog through the cars to ensure that the dog knows how to search through a vehicle. Plus, police dogs will be found in the terminal or on a plane at the gate so that they can detect hidden bombs or drugs. They are really good at proving security as their nose and scenting are very special. It can take hours for a bomb squad with the best invented equipment to detect explosives but police dogs can do the same job within half an hour. These dogs will be brought into airport terminals, seaports and rail stations where the bomb threat is present.
Normally, Labrador retriever or German shepherd are the breeds that are trained to provide security as they are gentle and have strong senses of hearing and smelling. Police dogs are trained since they are young. Handlers will teach dogs to sniff out explosives. It can take about 50 times a day until the dog finally learns the smell of the explosive sample. Handlers need to teach the dog to smell and recognize a dozen explosives such as dynamite and nitroglycerin. When the dog detects an explosive, he will be taught to just sit and stare at it. As we all know that it is necessary for to reward the dogs while training to make him excited and want to do the work more. In this case, the dogs will receive a special toy that makes them happy and want to find more explosives.
It is also necessary for police dog handlers to live with their dog and keep them healthy, smart and motivated. The handler must be the leader of the dog and also best friend. When it comes to security duties, it is important to keep the dog fit and healthy. Especially while detecting explosives, unhealthy dogs won’t be able to use their sensing as good as healthy ones. This is why it is essential to take care of each dog like they’re a part of family. Mostly well trained dogs will be calm and can stay under control. But it is recommended to play with the dog sometimes so that the dogs will be active and energized.
It is one of the biggest challenges for police dogs handlers to train the dogs to work for security. It requires hard work and effort but when the dogs are well trained, they can be really helpful and provide excellent work.
